Low Back Truck Bench Seats

Custom 40-20-40 Truck Bench Seats

40-20-40 truck seats replace a tired factory bench without losing the middle seat. The outer sections recline and fold on their own, and the center flips between console and seat.

This category covers our 40-20-40 bench seats in high back and low back styles, for Chevy, GMC, Ford and Dodge full-size trucks. Choose leather, vinyl or fabric, with custom lines in 20+ colors. Every seat is built to order rather than pulled from a shelf.

Custom Truck Seats: Choose Your Material and Color

Custom truck seats start with the material, which decides how the seat ages.

Genuine Leather softens with use and breathes better on a long drive. The choice for a daily driver.

Ultimate Leather is the hard-wearing option, easier to wipe down and more forgiving of work gloves and sun.

Vinyl costs less, cleans fastest and suits a work truck best.

Fabric stays closer to cab temperature year round, good if the truck sits outside.

Two-tone builds pair a body color with a contrast insert. Our custom bench seats open that up to more than 20 colors, so a custom truck bench seat can match the original interior or break from it. Judge color in daylight, not on screen.

Custom orders are built to spec, so allow build time. See shipping information for current lead times.

High Back vs Low Back Truck Seats

The difference is backrest height, and it is a cab decision more than a comfort one.

High back truck seats give full back and shoulder support with an integrated headrest. They suit extended and crew cabs, where there is room behind the seat.

Low back truck seats stop below the shoulder. In a single cab that shorter back is the difference between a seat that fits and one that touches the rear wall. A high back also puts the headrest where it belongs for long highway miles, which matters on a daily driver.

High back Low back
Support Full back, shoulders and head Lower and mid back
Space behind seat Needs more clearance Fits tight single cabs
Best cab type Extended and crew cabs Single and regular cabs
Look Modern, closer to a captain chair Classic truck bench profile

The American Classic is the clearest example, because it is built both ways. Its product page recommends the high back for expanded cabs and the low back to maximize space in a single cab. The same logic runs across the range.

If your cab is borderline, measure from the seat mount to the rear wall. That settles it faster than any photo.

How to Choose a 40-20-40 Truck Bench Seat

Work through these in order.

1. Cab type: This picks high back or low back before anything else. See the comparison table above.

2. Make, model and year: Every model mounts through an adapter bracket. The bracket selector on each product page confirms yours, and coverage differs between models, so check the one you want rather than assuming.

3. Material and color: Covered above. Decide this after fit rather than before it, because a color you love on a seat that does not fit the cab is wasted.

4. Console and options: Most models carry a flip-up center console with storage. Seat heat, massage, and manual or power lumbar are available per side on many of them, so the driver seat can differ from the passenger seat.

5. The model itself: The range is:

Every one is built to order, so the model decides styling rather than stock.

Features Common to Our 40-20-40 Truck Seats

Whichever model you choose, these carry across the whole range.

Fold-forward and recline backs: A lever reclines the back for a rest stop or folds it forward to open space behind the seat, where a toolbox goes in a single cab.

Flip-up center console with storage: Folded down it is a console with cupholders and storage. Flipped up it becomes a third seat, so the truck still carries three across.

Our truck seating shares one build across the line: heavy-duty tubular steel frames, no-sag springs and high-resilience foam.

Will It Fit? Truck Seat Compatibility

Almost every install needs an adapter bracket. The seat is built to one mounting standard, and the bracket matches it to your floor.

Each product page carries a bracket selector. Choose make, then year, then model, and the correct bracket appears with its price. Coverage spans Chevy and GMC, Ford and Dodge full-size trucks, with exact years varying by model.

Check two things before ordering: that your year appears in that model's selector, and that the floor has not been modified by a previous install. If in doubt, call 1-800-454-1801. Adding belts too? See truck seat belts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 40-20-40 mean in a truck seat?
It describes how the seat splits across the cab: 40 percent to the driver side, 20 to the center, 40 to the passenger side. The outer sections recline and fold on their own, while the center works as a console or a third seat.

Can I order a custom color or material for my truck seat?
Yes. Our custom lines offer more than 20 colors in leather, vinyl or fabric, including two-tone builds with a contrast insert. Custom orders are built to your spec rather than pulled from stock, so allow extra time against a standard color.

What is the difference between a bench seat and captain chairs?
A bench seats three across, because the center section flips up into a third seat. Captain chairs are two separate seats with a gap or console between them, and no middle position at all. See our truck captain chairs to compare.

Do I need brackets for my truck?
Almost certainly. The seats are built to one mounting standard, and the adapter bracket matches that to your floor. Brackets are sold separately and vary by make, year and body style, so use the bracket selector on the product page rather than measuring the old seat.

Are high back or low back seats better for my truck?
Neither is better; they suit different cabs. High back suits extended and crew cabs where there is room behind the seat. Low back suits single cabs where that clearance is tight. Measure from the seat mount to the rear wall and the answer is usually obvious.
