RV Sofa Beds and Sleeper Sofas

Most people land here for one of two reasons. Either the factory couch has given up, with a sagging frame, split upholstery or a sleeper mechanism that no longer latches, or the rig sleeps fewer people than it needs to and the lounge is the only place left to add a bed.

Both are solved the same way, but they lead to different shopping. A replacement has to match what is already bolted to the floor. An upgrade can be chosen on comfort and bed size.

This category covers jackknife sofa beds, sleeper sofas with a pull-out mechanism, and double recliners, in widths from 42 to 78 inches, built for RV, motorhome and camper interiors rather than adapted from household furniture.

RV Sofa Bed Sizes and Fit

RV furniture lives or dies on measurement. A household sofa bed has a few inches of slack. An RV couch sits in a slide-out or wall recess with almost none.

Measure the opening, not the old sofa
Take the recess or slide-out cutout at its narrowest point including trim, and the depth from the back wall to where the walkway begins. If the old couch was itself a poor fit, copying its dimensions repeats the mistake.

Check walkway clearance against sofa depth
A deeper sofa is more comfortable and eats the aisle behind it. In a motorhome where that aisle is the route to the bathroom at night, three extra inches are felt on every trip.

Open it before you commit
A sofa bed needs floor space to deploy. Measure how far the bed extends and check what it lands on. A dinette leg, a step or an open slide-out changes the answer.

Keep weight in mind
Every RV has a cargo carrying capacity and furniture counts against it. Check your rig's rating against what you are removing and adding, rather than assuming a like-for-like swap is weight neutral.

Types of RV Sleeper Sofas

Jackknife sofa beds work like a futon. Lift the seat cushion and pull it forward, and the back folds flat into a bed. No separate mattress and no mechanism underneath, so they are the lightest, simplest option and easiest to service. Best as a camper couch in smaller rigs.

Sleeper sofas with a pull-out mechanism keep a separate mattress folded inside a metal frame under the seat, so the bed is a proper bed rather than a folded-down backrest. Heavier, and they need more floor clearance to open. The better choice if the bed gets used regularly.

Double recliners replace the couch with two reclining seats. No bed, but better for a rig where the sleeping happens elsewhere. If the front seats are also tired, see RV captain's chairs.

Replacing a Factory RV Couch

Signs it is time
The frame flexes or creaks under normal weight. Foam has compressed so the seat sits lower on one side. Upholstery has split at the seams or front edge. The sleeper mechanism sticks, will not latch, or needs two people to close.

What to check before ordering
Find the mounting points first. Most RV sofas are fixed to the floor, and matching the existing pattern saves drilling into a floor you cannot see the underside of. Then check width against the recess, seat depth against the walkway, and back height against any window behind it. A sofa that blocks a window is technically a fit and practically a mistake.

Plan the removal
The old couch has to come out through the door. Measure the doorway before the new one arrives, and be ready to take the old one apart if it predates the walls.

Materials Built for RV Use

RV interiors swing between hot and cold, sit closed for weeks, and see more dust and moisture than a living room.

Vinyl and RV-grade faux leather handle heat and humidity and wipe clean, which matters when the same surface is a seat, a bed and occasionally a table.

Performance fabric is more comfortable against the skin in a hot cabin and breathes better than vinyl, but holds dust and wants vacuuming rather than wiping.

Genuine and Ultimate Leather sit at the top of the range and look right on a larger motorhome sofa. They need conditioning if the rig is stored in sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my RV for a replacement sofa bed?
Measure the wall recess or slide-out opening at its narrowest point including trim, the depth from the back wall to the start of the walkway, and the floor space in front for the bed to open into. Measure your entry door too, since the old sofa has to come out and the new one go in.

What is the difference between an RV sofa bed and a regular sleeper sofa?
RV sofa beds are built narrower and lighter for tight interiors, use upholstery chosen for heat and humidity, and mount to the floor. A household sleeper sofa is usually too deep for an RV walkway and too heavy to be a sensible swap.

Can I install an RV sofa bed myself?
Often yes, if the replacement matches the existing mounting points and you have a second person for the weight. It becomes a job for an RV service center when the floor mounts do not line up, when the old unit predates the walls, or when wiring runs behind it.
