RV Captain's Chairs

A captain's chair is the individual front seat in an RV or motorhome, for the driver and front passenger. What separates it from a fixed cab seat is that it swivels. Turn it around when parked and the front of the coach joins the living area.

Owners replace them when the upholstery wears through, when the seat stops being comfortable on a long drive, or when they want features the original lacked. This category covers motorhome seats, RV captain's chairs and campervan seats, built for standard pedestal and slide-track bases. A campervan cab is tighter than a Class A coach, so if you are comparing RV captain chairs for sale, start from your base and swivel clearance.

Driver's Seat and Passenger Chair

A driver seat for RV use has to clear the pedals, the steering column and usually a console or engine cover. That limits seat travel, armrest width, and sometimes how far it swivels. It also takes the most hours, so for a motorhome driver's seat foam density and lumbar support matter more than anywhere else.

The passenger chair is freer: more room to swivel, more scope for a wider seat or a power legrest, and it is the one used as a lounge chair when parked.

Replacing only one? Do the driver's seat. Replacing both? They need not be identical, and there is an argument for the legrest on the passenger side.

Features Worth Comparing

Swivel. The core function. A seat that rotates on paper can still hit the engine cover.

Recline. A reclining captains chair uses a manual lever or a power mechanism. Manual is simpler with less to fail on a rough road; power suits a seat shared by two drivers.

Power legrest. On selected models, marked LX. Worth it on the passenger side and in any coach where the front seats double as evening seating.

Integrated seatbelts. Marked IS. The belt anchors to the seat frame rather than the pillar behind it, which is what makes a swivel seat workable with a belt. If yours has one built in, your replacement needs it too.

Armrests and lumbar support. What decides whether a seat is still comfortable four hours in. Armrests must suit your wheel position, not just be present.

Upholstery. Ultimate Leather, premium faux leather and marine-grade fabrics. Faux leather and marine fabric handle cab heat and humidity; leather looks best but needs conditioning if stored in sun.

Fit and Installation

Match the base first. RV seats mount to a pedestal or slide-track, and the bolt pattern decides fit. Measure the existing pattern and top plate against the seat you want. Where they differ, an adapter base is usually the answer.

Measure the seat height. A taller seat changes your sightline over the dash and reach to the wheel. On a coach with a low windscreen header, two inches puts the header into your eyeline.

Check swivel clearance. Measure from the seat's widest point to the dash, console and door card through full rotation.

Plan for power. A power legrest or recline needs a supply run to the base. On a swivel seat the wiring must tolerate rotation, so leave slack and route it clear of pinch points.

Choosing the Right Captain's Chairs for Your Rig

There is no single best RV captains chair, only the right one for your coach.

  • Daily driver. Prioritize foam density, lumbar support and armrest position.
  • Weekend rig. Put the money into swivel and a legrest, so the front seats earn their keep when parked.
  • Manual or power. Manual for fewer failure points, power if two people share the driving.
  • One seat or two. Replacing one leaves a mismatched pair unless you match the model.
  • Seatbelt type. Non-negotiable. Match what your coach already uses.

Replacing the lounge too? See RV sofa beds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an aftermarket captain's chair fit my RV's factory base?
Usually, if the bolt pattern matches. Measure the existing pattern and top plate before ordering. Where it differs, an adapter plate is normally the fix.

What is the difference between a captain's chair and a regular RV seat?
A captain's chair is an individual front seat with its own armrests that swivels to face the living area. A regular RV seat is fixed forward, often part of a bench.

Can RV captain's chairs recline like a home recliner?
They recline, but not as far, since the seat must stay clear of the dash and what is behind it. Power legrest models get closest.

Can I fit captain's chairs in a campervan?
Often yes, but campervan bases vary more than motorhome ones and swivel clearance is tighter. Measure the base pattern and full swivel path first, and check whether the seatbelt anchors to the seat or pillar.
